The Spanish American Center (SAC) is a non-profit agency founded in 1966 by Latino community members and Catholic clergy in the years following President Lyndon B. Johnson’s declaration of war on poverty. The Center began as an outreach, information, and referral network aimed at helping Spanish-speaking residents navigate language barriers, basic services, and access to resources at a time when few bilingual supports existed locally.
The organization incorporated as a nonprofit in 1972 and has been certified by the Office of Supplier Diversity (formerly SOWMBA) since 1987. Under the long-standing leadership of Executive Director Neddy Latimer, the Spanish American Center has broadened its services in response to the needs of the community, while staying true to its mission (“to respond to the social, health, educational and cultural needs of the Leominster community and surrounding areas, especially the Hispanic/Latino community limited by language, poverty and access”) vision and values.
The Spanish-American Center is committed to empowering Spanish-speaking residents to overcome language barriers, promoting the development of our young people, fostering community involvement and leadership; collaborating with partners, and connecting clients to available community services.
Services Offered Today
Drawing on the wealth of Latino traditions as well as principles of American democracy, the Center has become known for its inclusive and collaborative approach that benefits residents of all backgrounds. It is also a bridge to other local resources and partners, helping residents access everything from health and legal services to employment and education support.
Today, the Spanish American Center provides an array of programs designed to address the needs of the community. These include a Food Pantry, Domestic Violence community-based prevention, English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes, STEM-based Crossroads After-School program, summer Verano Alegre youth program, Elder Services, legal clinics, emergency assistance, and individualized Information & Referral services.
In its six decades, the Center has fostered economic self-sufficiency, equal opportunity, community involvement, and quality of life. Its growth to a comprehensive human service organization reflects the diversity of our region and the need for culturally competent, accessible care. As a community hub for practical help and connection, the Spanish American Center works to uphold its founding vision: a safe, healthy, peaceful, and prosperous community where every person can participate fully.
